Tanqueray traces back to 1830, when a twenty-year-old Charles Tanqueray broke with three generations of family clergymen and opened a distillery on Vine Street in London's Bloomsbury district. He tested more than three hundred recipes before settling on the formula still used today, and after his death in 1868 the business passed to his son. The Bloomsbury distillery was badly damaged during World War II, and the sole surviving still, nicknamed Old Tom and dating back to the reign of King George III, now operates at Tanqueray's current home, Cameron Bridge Distillery in Fife, Scotland.

The gin is built from just four botanicals, juniper, coriander, angelica root, and licorice, distilled four times through copper pot stills for a clean, smooth result. It starts from a base of one hundred percent grain neutral spirit, and the closely guarded balance of botanicals has changed little since Charles Tanqueray's original recipe, bottled today at 47.3 percent alcohol for the export market.

Crisp and unmistakably juniper-forward, it carries a peppery hit of coriander and a whisper of warm spice before finishing clean and dry. It remains the standard pour for a gin and tonic with a lime slice, and holds its structure equally well in a classic martini or a Negroni.

"Tanqueray London Dry Gin is the standard-bearer, and the company provides the identity of only three ingredients ? angelica, coriander, and juniper. The rest are secret. [It's said there is only one more: licorice.] That said, all one really needs to know ? or tastes ? in Tanqueray is the juniper. Along with Beefeater, I think it's one of the most juniper-heavy gins on the market. Obviously people are into that: ?Tanq & Tonic? is one of the most-called-by-name drinks of all time. The juniper nose is rich and strong on the palate. Secondary flavors are elusive, but you'll find mildly bitter lemon and orange peel if you hunt for them. That evergreen character is all-encompassing, and as with heavily-peated Scotch, you either like this or you don't. I find Tanqueray grows on you over time, but my ultimate gin preference is always to seek something with a little more balance and nuance."
