Westward Whiskey was founded in 2004 in Portland, Oregon, and has become one of the leading voices in the American single malt category, drawing on the Pacific Northwest's craft beer culture as much as Scottish whisky tradition. The distillery takes a grain-to-glass approach, sourcing two-row barley grown and malted locally, then fermenting it with an in-house ale yeast that gives the base beer, and eventually the whiskey, a distinctly brewery-influenced character rather than the more neutral wash typical of Scotch production.

The whiskey is double distilled in copper pot stills before maturing in newly charred American oak barrels, a choice that leans closer to bourbon production than the used casks favored in Scotland and contributes a deep amber color along with pronounced vanilla and caramel character. Classic Westward expressions typically age four to six years, though this release carries no age statement. Barrels are hand-selected and bottled straight from the cask without dilution or chill filtration, landing at a robust 62.5% ABV.

The nose offers toasted almond, graham cracker, and black pepper, with baking spice and a whisper of smoke developing underneath. On the palate, dark chocolate and espresso meet caramel and toasted oak, with dried fruit adding depth. The finish is long and warming, closing on cinnamon, toasted grain, and a lingering peppery heat.
