San Zanj 'Without Angels' White Rum 750ml

San Zanj comes from Berling S.A., a family owned Haitian company tracing its roots to 1862 in Port-au-Prince, when brothers Dupré and Labbe Barbancourt began distilling rum from locally sourced clairin. The brothers split their business in 1870, with Labbe continuing under a separate venture that eventually became Berling S.A., distinct from the better known Barbancourt house founded by his brother. Today Labbe's great-grandson, Herbert Barbancourt Linge, runs the company and has become one of the most recognized figures in Haitian clairin and rum production.

San Zanj, meaning without angels in Haitian Creole, refers to the spirit's unaged style, since no time spent resting in barrel means no angel's share lost to evaporation. The blend combines clairin from two dedicated clairin producers with unaged rum from a third distillery, all located in the Cul-de-Sac plain near Port-au-Prince and all distilling on Creole column stills dating to the 1940s. The base material is largely Madame Meuze, a heirloom sugarcane variety grown without chemicals or fertilizers, harvested by hand and pressed for pure cane juice with nothing added during fermentation.

The rum is bottled at 43% ABV and shows a bright, tropical character, with notes of banana pudding and other tropical fruit balanced by a clean, dry finish that reflects its unaged, cane forward style.
