Solerno Blood Orange Liqueur 750ml
Solerno is produced by William Grant & Sons, the Scottish family distillery behind Hendrick's Gin, and was developed by master distiller Lesley Gracie, who also created that gin's signature formula. The liqueur is made exclusively on the island of Sicily, drawing on the region's centuries old citrus growing tradition, and has picked up medals at both the International Wine & Spirit Competition and International Spirits Challenge since its release.
The liqueur centers on Sanguinello blood oranges grown on the volcanic slopes of Mount Etna, prized locally as arancia rossa for their deep crimson flesh, which develops during a narrow winter to early spring harvest window. Production involves three separate small batch distillations in copper pot stills: one from the orange flesh, one from the zest to capture essential oils, and one from Sicilian lemons to add balance and complexity. The distillates are blended and lightly sweetened with sugar from sugar beets rather than relying on a single simple extraction.
The result is a fragrant, layered liqueur with real citrus perfume, floral blossom notes, and a bittersweet edge that keeps it from tasting like syrupy orange candy. Bottled at 40 percent alcohol by volume, it has enough body and strength to hold its structure in stirred or shaken cocktails without needing extra sweetener.
