The Return of an Old Friend: Albert Morot is Back

We've been pouring, selling, and personally drinking Albert Morot for a long time, this is one of the domaines we've stood behind through good vintages and lean ones. So when a pair of stunning 2022s from this storied Beaune estate landed, it felt right to make some noise, especially since these happen to be the last wines made entirely under the domaine's longtime steward before a new chapter began. Our Burgundy guy Joe came back from Beaune raving about how good these wines were. They have that exceptional purity of fruit and sense of place Morot is known for and these wines always have a great track record of aging very well. 

Domaine Albert Morot traces back to 1820, when Philibert Morot started as a négociant in Beaune, with the family becoming vineyard owners in their own right in 1890 during the phylloxera crisis. For the past 25 years the estate was shaped by Geoffroy Choppin de Janvry, who farmed its premier cru holdings organically and built its reputation as one of Beaune's most respected addresses. In 2023, the estate entered a new era, acquired by Guillaume and Sophie Poitrinal, with acclaimed Rhône winemaker Pierre-Jean Villa now at the helm. These 2022s are Geoffroy's, made entirely under the old regime, arguably the final word of that chapter, and a genuine piece of the domaine's history before the changeover.

2022 is shaping up to be one of the great modern Burgundy vintages, ripe, generous, and beautifully balanced, with structure that rewards patience without demanding a decade in the cellar. These two wines show that in very different ways.

2022 Albert Morot, Beaune 1er Cru "Les Teurons" — $79.99

Les Teurons sits between Les Grèves and Clos de la Mousse, farmed on thin, limestone-strewn soil over solid bedrock. Expect dense mulberry fruit and a firm, saline minerality that's become this site's signature. Burghound's Allen Meadows scored it 91-93 points, calling it "sleek, delicious and vibrant" with a "subtle minerality" carrying through to a "compact, dusty" finish, and noted this is a wine that rewards a few years of patience.

2022 Albert Morot, Beaune 1er Cru "Les Bressandes" — $79.99

Les Bressandes sits high on the slope, just above Les Grèves, a site long known for giving extra roundness and richness. Fresh and firm, with spicy red and black fruit and a touch of violet, this one leans more powerful and built-to-age. Burghound's Allen Meadows scored it 91-94 points, calling it "very clearly built-to-age" with "fine punch and mid-palate density," and noting real development potential ahead.
