Our First Sunday Tasting: Wines of Paros

For the first time ever, we are holding a tasting on a Sunday, and we can't think of a better way to start than with a trip to the Greek islands.

This Sunday, October 25, from 11 am to 1 pm, our old friend Sotiris Bafitis will be at the shop pouring the wines of Paros Farming Community. Paros sits in the Cyclades, just north of Santorini. In 1929 the island's farmers banded together to form a cooperative, and nearly a century later it remains the heart of the island's agriculture, producing wine, cheese and olive oil. A new generation has recently revitalized the winery with fresh investment and a focus on quality.

The wines are built on Paros's two native grapes, the white Monemvasia and the red Mandilaria. Many vines are old and ungrafted, trained low to the ground to shelter them from the island's strong winds, which keeps yields naturally small. The farming is organic and fermentations rely on wild yeasts. Paros is also the only appellation in Greece that permits white grapes in its red wines, which gives the reds a character all their own.

MAKE A MORNING OF IT:
The Palisades Farmers Market sets up right on our block every Sunday until 1 pm, so the timing could not be better. It is a fitting pairing, since Paros Farming Community is itself a farmers' cooperative that makes cheese and olive oil alongside its wines. Check out the vendors, then stop in to find a bottle you love, and you will have your Sunday dinner covered.
