Burgundy's Best-Kept Value Secret
St-Aubin Just Landed... Burgundy's Best-Kept Value Secret!
If you know, you know: St-Aubin is where savvy Burgundy drinkers shop while everyone else is still fighting over Puligny and Chassagne allocations. Tucked into a cool, east-facing amphitheater of limestone in the southern Côte de Beaune, St-Aubin shares a fence line and in some spots, a literal border with those Grand Cru neighbors. Same soil, same exposure logic, a fraction of the price. We have been anxiously awaiting these arrivals as St. Aubin always punches above its weight and the demand for great white burg remains strong.
St-Aubin makes for a great excuse to talk terroir. This appellation's limestone-heavy slopes and cooler mesoclimate (a lot of the best sites face north or east, catching morning sun and dodging the afternoon heat) are exactly why the wines carry that chalky, flinty tension Burgundy geeks chase without the Puligny price tag. It's the appellation locals have quietly known about for decades.
This drop is a deep one, with six bottlings from four producers doing serious work in the village:
- Philippe Girard, 1er Cru "En la Ranchée" (2024) — a steep, east-facing hillside parcel with 20-year-old vines
- Marc Colin, village "Cuvée Luce" (2023) — a three-parcel blend named for winemaker Damien Colin's grandmother
- Marc Colin, "Sous Roche Dumay" (2024) — another distinct parcel expression from the same estate
- Philippe Girard, "Champ Tirant" (2024) — A smaller, less known grower making awesome wines “under the radar”
- Françoise & Denis Clair, village St-Aubin (2024) — a benchmark producer for the appellation
- Françoise & Denis Clair, "Dents de Chien" (2024) — a single-vineyard bottling from the same estate
- Domaine de Montille, 1er Cru "Remilly" (2022) — one of the most prestigious sites in St-Aubin, from a top Volnay-based house
Six different expressions of the same limestone backbone, each showing how much a hillside, a vine age, or a few hundred meters can shift what ends up in the glass. Structured, mineral-driven, and priced like they don't know how good they are.
