North is a small side project of John Alban, the winemaker widely credited with pioneering Rhone varieties in California through his Edna Valley estate, Alban Vineyards. For years, John kept only a fraction of the Pinot Noir and Chardonnay he grew, selling most of it off to fund his Rhone ambitions, but as those old contracts lapsed he began bottling the fruit himself. He named the resulting vineyard block North for the cool northern exposure that shapes its character, a nod, he has said, to how his own upbringing in Northern Ireland shaped him.

The 2015 vintage comes from that same North block within the Edna Valley, an appellation known for calcareous and volcanic hillside soils and one of California's longest, coolest growing seasons thanks to marine fog rolling in from nearby Los Osos and Morro Bay. That extended ripening period allows Pinot Noir here to build real complexity without losing acidity. True to Alban's stated approach, the wine is made without deference to any preconceived idea of what Pinot Noir from the site is supposed to taste like, instead letting the block speak for itself each vintage.

Aromatically the wine leans elegant and spiced, with notes of baking spice, cumin, and celery seed framing a core of dark, brooding fruit. On the palate it shows real power and structure for Pinot Noir, layered with smoke, clove, and leather beneath its blue and red fruit. Its depth and savory edge suit roasted duck, grilled quail, or a rich lentil stew.

93 Points
"Elegant and complex aromatically, with lots of baking spices, cumin and celery seed, it has a rocking core of fruit, lots of floral overtones, medium to full-bodied richness and an overriding sense of elegance. It will shine out of the gate, yet evolve nicely."
