2018 Ballentine Vineyards Zinfandel Napa Estate

Ballentine Vineyards traces its roots to 1933, when John Ballentine received one of Napa Valley’s original bonded winery licenses shortly after Prohibition. Decades later, Betty and Van revived the family legacy, building a winery in 1995 behind a century‑old farmhouse. Since 1999, Bruce Devlin has led a small‑production, red‑wine‑only program that honors the family’s long tenure on the land.

This Zinfandel is sourced entirely from the estate’s own sustainably farmed vineyards, totaling roughly 75 acres across three distinct sites: Crystal Springs at the base of Howell Mountain, Pocai Ranch between the Napa River and the Silverado Trail, and the Home Vineyard surrounding the winery itself. The warm northern Napa climate suits Zinfandel, encouraging full ripeness, while the varied soils across the three sites add depth and complexity to the blend.

Wine profile

  • Grape characteristics: estate‑grown Zinfandel from three separate sites, showcasing classic varietal brightness and structure.
  • Taste notes: briary, brambly blackberry and black plum greet the palate, with Cedary, sage, and subtle black pepper accents.
  • Aroma: layers of dark fruit entwined with herbal and spice nuances that unfold with air.
  • Structure: moderate, well‑integrated tannins give supportive frame without heaviness.
  • Finish: long and spicy, leaving a lingering distinction of fruit and spice.

Winemaking & production

The wine reflects Ballentine’s commitment to estate farming and thoughtful, site‑driven blending. With Bruce Devlin at the helm, the operation emphasizes small production red wines that express the land’s history and character.
