2022 Brewer-Clifton Ex Post Facto Syrah (750ml)

Ex Post Facto is Brewer-Clifton’s Rhône-inspired expression, a side project from Greg Brewer whose Santa Barbara County winemaking spans decades of Burgundian-styled Chardonnay and Pinot Noir. This 2022 vintage is sourced from Perilune Vineyard in Sta. Rita Hills, a cool-climate pocket within Santa Barbara County renowned more for delicate whites and reds than for bold Rhône varieties. By fermenting a portion of whole clusters—an approach borrowed from his Pinot Noir work—Brewer pursues a lighter, more transparent Syrah that emphasizes finesse over power.

The wine leans toward restraint and precision, inviting closer inspection of its aroma and texture before the palate unfolds.

Tasting Notes

  • Aromas: green peppercorn, dried clove, olive brine, menthol
  • Palate: black cherry, raspberry, dried blackberry, with a lilac floral lift
  • Texture and finish: firm and dry on the palate with a savory, persistent finish

Vineyard & Style

Perilune Vineyard provides the cool-climate character that shapes this Syrah, yielding a wine that speaks to Sta. Rita Hills' nuanced balance rather than bold Rhône power. The result sits clearly within a Rhône-inspired style, yet remains distinctly Californian in its restraint and transparency, reflecting Brewer's re-interpretation of the variety away from heavier, fruit-forward norms.

Food Pairings

  • Grilled venison
  • Herb-crusted pork loin
  • Briny olives and cured meats board
92 Points
"Lively red and black berry fruits, sage, ground pepper, conifer, and cedarwood notes all emerge from the 2022 Syrah, a 100% Syrah that's all from the Perilune Vineyard in the Sta. Rita Hills. Not destemmed and brought up in neutral oak, it's medium-bodied, has a supple, elegant mouthfeel, the more broad, rounded style of the vintage, and outstanding length. It’s another brilliant wine from winemaker Greg Brewer that readers will love."
