Producer

Mark Aubert learned his craft in 1989 under Helen Turley at Peter Michael Winery, then carried that terroir focused, low yield philosophy through stints at Colgin Cellars, Sloan, Futo, and Bryant Family before founding Aubert Wines with his wife Teresa in 1999. The winery quickly became known for vineyard designated Chardonnay and Pinot Noir, sold mostly through a mailing list rather than the open market. Production remains a true family operation, with Mark overseeing winemaking and Teresa running the business side.

Growing and Production

UV-SL takes its name from the Aubert's longtime vineyard manager, the late Ulises Valdez Sr., and its location on Stoetz Lane, just six miles from the Pacific Ocean in the far western reaches of the Sonoma Coast. Despite that coastal proximity, the site runs warmer than expected, with volcanic soil influence and afternoon sun tempered by cool ocean breezes, allowing the fruit to reach full ripeness. Aubert follows a minimal intervention approach here, using native yeast fermentation and gentle handling to let the vineyard's character come through with real intensity.

Tasting Notes

The 2024 vintage is poised and structured, opening with black cherry, mulberry, hoisin, and star anise, layered with a complex, foresty note that reflects the chaparral surrounding the vineyard. Graphite and blonde tobacco add further depth, while the palate shows firm, fine tannins, rich blackberry oil, and cocoa, all carried by bright acidity into a long, lingering finish. It pairs beautifully with roasted duck, herb crusted lamb, or a simple grilled salmon.

99 Points
"The 2024 Pinot Noir UV-SL Vineyard is one of the standouts in the lineup. Raspberry coulis, evergreen, redwood, and sweet spice are accented by pronounced marine influence and striking salinity. The palate combines focus and verticality with notes of wild raspberry, sweet orange, and crushed volcanic stone. Energetic, layered, and exceptionally long, this brilliant Pinot Noir captures both the power and freshness of the site. Drink 2027-2047."
