Sazerac Rye is produced by Buffalo Trace Distillery in Frankfort, Kentucky, one of the oldest continuously operating distilleries in the country, with a history reaching back into the 18th century. The whiskey takes its name from the historic Sazerac Coffee House on Royal Street in New Orleans, where rye whiskey and Peychaud's Bitters were combined into a toddy that eventually became the Sazerac, widely considered America's first branded cocktail. Buffalo Trace has long counted figures like Colonel E.H. Taylor Jr. and George T. Stagg among its influences, and Sazerac Rye carries that legacy forward as the brand's flagship rye offering.

Often nicknamed "Baby Saz" for its kinship with the more limited Sazerac 18 Year, this whiskey is distilled using Buffalo Trace's low-rye mash bill, believed to sit around 51 to 55 percent rye with the remainder split between corn and malted barley. That composition gives it more sweetness and a rounder body than higher-rye styles from Pennsylvania or Maryland. It carries a straight rye designation without a stated age, though it has historically been understood to rest around six years before bottling at 90 proof.

The nose brings clove, vanilla, anise, and a touch of citrus, while the palate turns toward honey sweetness, cinnamon, and allspice with a light peppery edge. The finish is smooth and medium in length, closing on a note of licorice. It remains the whiskey of choice for its namesake cocktail, though it works just as well in a classic Manhattan.
