Akashi Whiskey 750ml
Eigashima Shuzo runs the White Oak distillery on the shores of the Seto Inland Sea in Hyogo Prefecture, just west of Kobe. Founded as a sake and shochu producer in 1888, the distillery became the first in Japan to hold a whisky license, obtained in 1919, though full-time whisky production did not begin until 1984. As Japan's smallest whisky distillery, White Oak still distills only a couple months out of the year, giving Akashi a genuinely small-batch character rare among Japanese whisky brands.
Akashi Blended combines Japanese malt and grain whisky with sourced Scotch, built around roughly 70% corn and 30% lightly peated malt. The whisky matures for about three years, primarily in ex-bourbon barrels before finishing in ex-sherry casks, a two-stage process that lends both grainy sweetness and darker fruit character. Bottled at 40% ABV, it draws on production methods rooted in shochu distilling alongside more traditional Scottish influences like pot stills and malted UK barley.
Expect a soft, approachable dram with black cherry, vanilla, and dried apricot on the nose. The palate brings golden apple, toffee, and a touch of oat, while a coastal, sea-air quality lingers underneath. The finish is smooth and malty, closing with a whisper of peat smoke and gentle sweetness. It works well in a Manhattan or an Old Fashioned.
