Bacardí was founded in 1862 in Santiago de Cuba by Don Facundo Bacardí Massó, who set out to refine a smoother, more consistent style of rum than the harsh spirits typical of the era. After Cuban operations were seized by the revolutionary government in 1960, the company continued through facilities it had already established elsewhere, most notably in Cataño, Puerto Rico, where production began in 1937. That distillery, once dubbed the Cathedral of Rum by the island's governor, sits along San Juan Bay and remains one of the largest rum production facilities in the world, now the primary home of the Bacardí brand.

Bacardi Gold, originally sold as Carta Oro before being renamed in 2009, is produced at the Cataño distillery from molasses fermented with Bacardí's proprietary yeast strain, a strain the family famously relocated out of Cuba ahead of the 1960 seizure. The rum is distilled in column stills, then aged roughly one to two years in charred American oak barrels, which lend it a light amber color and rounds out the spirit's character compared to the unaged Superior expression. It is filtered before bottling at 40% ABV.

Bacardi Gold offers a light, approachable profile built around vanilla, toasted almond, and caramel, with a touch of oak spice and a clean, moderately dry finish that keeps it from feeling heavy.

"A light golden rum with a soft oak flavor. Notes of dry vanilla, ginger root, and toasted almond provide a dry and slightly sweet finish.
