Bacardí traces its origins to 1862, when Don Facundo Bacardí Massó introduced Superior after a decade spent refining his approach to rum in Santiago de Cuba. At a time when white rums were typically harsh and unrefined, Bacardí set out to create something smoother and more versatile, drawing on a charcoal filtration method the family had pioneered a decade earlier, in 1852. Production later relocated to Cataño, Puerto Rico, where the brand remains headquartered today.

Superior begins as molasses fermented with a proprietary yeast strain, then distilled using a parallel process that produces two separate spirits, a heavier aguardiente and a lighter redistillado, which are blended together before aging. The rum rests for one to two years in American white oak barrels, then passes through a multistage charcoal filtration process using thirteen different types of charcoal, both before and after aging, a technique that strips away color and heavier compounds while preserving its delicate character.

The result is light and aromatically balanced, opening with soft floral and fruity top notes alongside subtle almond and a whisper of fresh lime. Vanilla emerges through the palate, which stays soft and gently sweet, closing on a dry, crisp, and clean finish.
