Meet and Greet: Sergio and Sebastiano Mottura
FREE In-Store Wine Tasting Saturday, June 20 | 1-4pm
Nestled in the volcanic hills of Civitella d’Agliano in northern Lazio — where the ancient borders of Lazio and Umbria blur — the Mottura estate has been in family hands since 1933. It was Sergio Mottura who transformed this storied property into one of Italy’s most celebrated white-wine estates, pioneering organic viticulture (1996). Today Giuseppe Mottura — third generation of the family — continues the philosophy of minimal intervention and respect for indigenous varieties.
Among Italy’s white-wine producers, Sergio Mottura stands apart as the supreme master of Grechetto. Across 37 hectares of volcanic, mineral-rich soils, the estate coaxes extraordinary complexity from this noble indigenous variety as well as from the Procanico-based Orvieto blends that have been made here since at least 1292. The estate was the first Lazio producer ever to receive the coveted Tre Bicchieri (Three Glasses) award from Gambero Rosso —( Italy’s most prestigious wine honor) for a white wine (2004).with Grechetto ‘Latour a Civitella.’ Gambero Rosso has since named Sergio Mottura “Winemaker of the Year.”
