The campaign has come to a close with the release of VCC and L'Eglise Clinet Thursday morning. Prices (on average) are the lowest since 2012 vintage and some are even lower than 2005! A very rare occurrence to see luxury goods drop in price this significantly. Now that the list is complete here's my top 10 (not in order)
Figeac (this is a relatively ridiculous price for Figeac!)
La Conseillante (one of the first wines I tasted and another masterpiece from Marielle!)
Vieux Chateau Certan (Haunting-with a higher % of Cabernet than usual)
Montrose (another year, another superb Montrose. Great price too)
Haut Brion (wine of the vintage?)
Cos d'Estournel (one of the best young Cos's I've had in quite some time-may end up wine of the vintage)
Carmes Haut Brion (Guillaume has once again crafted a beautiful and singular wine)
Leoville Barton (nice wine/nice price!)
Rauzan Segla (same as above)
Beau-Sejour Becot (one of my favorites from the famed limestone plateau this year)
The 2024 Bordeaux Campaign
I was in Bordeaux two weeks ago, tasting extensively to get a clear sense of the vintage—I’ll have some updated notes coming soon but here’s some initial thoughts
This is a vintage you'll be able to enjoy on the younger side, much like 2004. The wines show accessibility, freshness, and charm, even in their youth.
I tasted very few wines that were thin or green—a testament to the state-of-the-art winemaking, sheer talent, and hard work of our friends in Bordeaux. Even in a tricky growing season, quality prevailed.
This is a vintage to focus on the top Châteaux. These estates had the resources to do whatever was necessary to produce wines they’re proud of, and it shows in the glass.
Prices are way down. Cheval Blanc released yesterday at its lowest price since 2004, and Montrose is being offered at its lowest price in over 20 years. The Larcis price is a steal, Haut Bailly came down 32% , etc. etc. This represents a rare opportunity for savvy collectors.
