Kirk & Sweeney Gran Reserva Rum 750ml

Kirk & Sweeney takes its name from a wooden schooner famous for smuggling rum from the Caribbean into the United States during Prohibition, anchoring just outside U.S. territorial waters and offloading its cargo onto smaller, faster boats bound for shore. The brand, produced by 35 Maple Street Distillery under president August Sebastiani, is crafted in the Dominican Republic from traditionally harvested sugarcane. Around 2020, the label moved away from age stated releases such as its former 12 and 18 year expressions in favor of an ageless core lineup consisting of Reserva, Gran Reserva, and Gran Reserva Superior.

Gran Reserva is a blend of rums aged in American oak barrels in the Dominican Republic, drawn from stock ranging between five and twenty years old. This blending approach, common among Dominican rum producers, allows the distillers to build complexity and consistency across batches while drawing on both younger and considerably older reserves in the final mix.

The rum opens with an intriguing aroma built on roasted cane sugar, layered with intense vanilla and faint notes of sherry and raisin. On the palate, deep vanilla gives way to dried fruit, nutmeg, and cinnamon spice, finishing smooth with lingering oak, sherry, and a touch of raisin. It suits sipping neat or on the rocks, and pairs nicely with dark chocolate or aged cheese.
