2021 Violin - Koosah Vineyard Pinot Noir Willamette Valley

Koosah, translated as “heavenly sky” in local Chinook jargon, became a fitting name for the 80 acre saddle of a
windswept pinnacle in the central Eola-Amitys hills, purchased and developed by Kevin and Carla Chambers to
become what was their self described “magnum opus”. After more than a quarter century farming their former
vineyard Resonance, (and in addition to many roles in bettering the Oregon wine community and industry), they
began planting the Basalt laden crest in 2016, with a current total of nearly 45 acres under vine. The majority of
the site tilts steeply down an Eastern face, resulting in well exposed rows with elevation change of nearly 200
vertical feet, while the Western side of the apex drops steeply downhill before forming a bowl with young vines
on the far edge of the property. Situated like a helix shape in this high, protected valley is the first Pinot noir,
Block 1, a 2.15 acre parcel planted in a massale selection of 5 Dijon clones, ranging from 950 to almost 1050 feet
elevation. We believe this is the highest elevation Pinot noir being farmed in the Eola-Amity Hills.
We reference “The Cosmic Pipe” after the Radionic Broadcaster of the same colloquial name, fixed into the
fractured Basalt just above the steep set of vines adjacent to this block. To some extent, we consider the Pipe
the axis for the energy of the farm, and Kevin would claim it is used as much to focus our intent as winegrowers.
While we have also worked with rows from the lower Eastern block, the vigor and energy in Block 1 has resulted
in our most expressive and complete wines from the young site.

2021 was the first year this canopy hit a mature stride, yielding the perfect amount of fruit for two identical three
ton fermenters, filled using 10% as whole clusters. These were wonderfully foamy and energetic ferments,
hitting ideal peak temperatures and finishing their sugar conversions before twenty days. After nearly 16
months in a selection of tight-grained French Oak including 25% new, The Cosmic Pipe rested in stainless for
just over three weeks before bottling on March 23, 2023.
Heady mix of crushed berries, seaweed salad, high floral tones and pitty funk. Tense, purple, almost crushed
pez, a fragrant spiced character frames the broad range of wound up aromatics. Super juicy on entry, the
strength of the wine well matched against vibrating acid. Spicy fruit but not only red, an almost exotic shade
shows more evident on the palate. Tannins are especially refined here, prickly in their youth but with a powerful
level of throughput and persistence. All the way from fresh and bright to dark and brooding, an overarching
elegance lends a very sexy, alluring quality—uniquely rounded and graceful build around a coiled and
mouthwatering core.
95 cases and 18 magnums produced
13.5 % alcohol by volume

-Winery notes

https://www.bassins.com/images/thumbs/009/0098202_2021-violin-koosah-vineyard-pinot-noir-willamette-valley_360.png
https://www.bassins.com/images/thumbs/009/0098202_2021-violin-koosah-vineyard-pinot-noir-willamette-valley.png
txt-content">Moulin à Vent is called King of Beaujolais. It has a beautifully and finely reductive and very herbal nose of minty thyme, rosemary, white pepper, spearmint, flintstone, and other wild herbs, before showing fine scents of white flowers and lime tree. Koosah, translated as “heavenly sky” in local Chinook jargon, became a fitting name for the 80 acre saddle of a windswept pinnacle in the central Eola-Amitys hills, purchased and developed by Kevin and Carla Chambers to become what was their self described “magnum opus”. After more than a quarter century farming their former vineyard Resonance, (and in addition to many roles in bettering the Oregon wine community and industry), they began planting the Basalt laden crest in 2016, with a current total of nearly 45 acres under vine. The majority of the site tilts steeply down an Eastern face, resulting in well exposed rows with elevation change of nearly 200 vertical feet, while the Western side of the apex drops steeply downhill before forming a bowl with young vines on the far edge of the property. Situated like a helix shape in this high, protected valley is the first Pinot noir, Block 1, a 2.15 acre parcel planted in a massale selection of 5 Dijon clones, ranging from 950 to almost 1050 feet elevation. We believe this is the highest elevation Pinot noir being farmed in the Eola-Amity Hills. We reference “The Cosmic Pipe” after the Radionic Broadcaster of the same colloquial name, fixed into the fractured Basalt just above the steep set of vines adjacent to this block. To some extent, we consider the Pipe the axis for the energy of the farm, and Kevin would claim it is used as much to focus our intent as winegrowers. While we have also worked with rows from the lower Eastern block, the vigor and energy in Block 1 has resulted in our most expressive and complete wines from the young site.
2021 was the first year this canopy hit a mature stride, yielding the perfect amount of fruit for two identical three ton fermenters, filled using 10% as whole clusters. These were wonderfully foamy and energetic ferments, hitting ideal peak temperatures and finishing their sugar conversions before twenty days. After nearly 16 months in a selection of tight-grained French Oak including 25% new, The Cosmic Pipe rested in stainless for just over three weeks before bottling on March 23, 2023. Heady mix of crushed berries, seaweed salad, high floral tones and pitty funk. Tense, purple, almost crushed pez, a fragrant spiced character frames the broad range of wound up aromatics. Super juicy on entry, the strength of the wine well matched against vibrating acid. Spicy fruit but not only red, an almost exotic shade shows more evident on the palate. Tannins are especially refined here, prickly in their youth but with a powerful level of throughput and persistence. All the way from fresh and bright to dark and brooding, an overarching elegance lends a very sexy, alluring quality—uniquely rounded and graceful build around a coiled and mouthwatering core. 95 cases and 18 magnums produced 13.5 % alcohol by volume
Moulin à Vent is called King of Beaujolais. This is the Cru with the longest cellaring potential and which is closest to its Burgundian neighours. As it ages, it is sometimes said to “pinote”. This cuvée is the expression of the alliance between finesse and power. The aromatic palate is wide, going from very ripe small red berries through spice to mineral notes. The three different plots of vines we use for this cuvée give a wine that is full and balanced: Rochegrès give finesse, Roche Noire liveliness and fruit while La Rochelle contributes power.
Harvested on October 2, the 2023 Chardonnay Van der Kamp Vineyard was matured for 18 months in 20% new French oak. It has pure aromas of apricot, quince and Meyer lemon plus nuances of roasted almonds and beeswax. The palate features powerful, concentrate...
The 2023 Pinot Noir Van der Kamp Vineyard was matured for 18 months in 20% new French oak. It has dynamic aromas, with raspberry and pomegranate giving way to wafts of juniper, tea leaves, hibiscus and woodsy undertones, and it continues to offer addition...
The 2022 Pinot Noir Gap's Crown Vineyard has bright, detailed scents of red cherry, cranberry, rose petals, earth and tea leaves, and it opens dramatically as it spends time in the glass. The light-bodied palate is silky and vibrant. It's loaded with perf...
The 2023 Chardonnay Hyde Vineyard comes from 30-year-old Wente vines, and the wine was matured for 18 months in 20% new French oak. It has slowly unfolding scents of orchard fruit, oyster shell, bread dough, hazelnuts and floral perfume. The light-bodied ...
Looking first at the 2020 Cornas Les Chailles, which is the younger vine cuvée of the domaine, it sports a healthy purple hue to go with meaty, slightly reductive notes of ripe black and blue fruits, lavender, rose petal, and black pepper. It's medium to ...
Lastly, the tiny production 2020 Cornas Les Vieilles Fontaines comes from 80-year-old vines on granite soil. It's a more primordial effort, offering layers of black and blue fruits, rose petals, candied violets, bloody meat, and bouquet garni. Uber-rich, ...
The older vine cuvée, the 2020 Cornas Les Vieilles Vignes is 100% Syrah. It's similarly inky hued and offers up full-bodied aromas and flavors of ripe black cherries, graphite, bouquet garni, and iron. It's deep, concentrated, and powerful on the palate, ...
Voge's 2020 Saint Joseph Les Cotes—from a parcel in Mauves—came across as slightly exotic in the blind-tasting lineup, with hints of violets, licorice and stone fruit. Maturing in older barriques, it's medium to full-bodied and supple on the palate, with ...
This is always one of my favorite wines. I honestly can’t say what it is specifically I love about it. It’s a bit grander and more elegant, more crystalline than the Felsenfest… yet there is something still delicate and easy about it. It’s so, so, so serious, but also clear and easy to drink. I love this wine.
The 2022er Goldgrube Riesling, as it is referred to on the consumer label, is a bone-dry wine made from fruit harvested on up to 120-year-old un- grafted vines and was left for 1 year on its gross lees. It has a beautifully and finely reductive and very herbal nose of minty thyme, rosemary, white pepper, spearmint, flintstone, and other wild herbs, before showing fine scents of white flowers and lime tree. The wine starts off on a slightly round and creamy side, yet an acidic backbone clearly comes through and leads to a straight and quite spicy long finish. This defies the richer side of the 2022 vintage and proves superbly refined and playful. The aftertaste is all about smoke and white flowers and proves bone-dry in taste.
